Newcomers to Alberta who hold a foreign driver’s license must provide a certified translation before they can exchange it for an Alberta license or take a road test. Canadian authorities, including Alberta Registry Agents, require translations to be accurate and complete to verify your driving history and identity.
Only accredited translators or translation agencies can issue certified translations accepted in Alberta. Look for members of the Association of Translators and Interpreters of Alberta (ATIA) or other recognized bodies. The translation must include a statement of accuracy, the translator’s credentials, and contact information.
First, obtain a clear copy of your foreign driver’s license – both front and back if applicable. Submit it to a certified translator along with any supporting documents like your passport. The translator will produce a certified translation and provide both a digital and physical copy. This process usually takes 1–3 business days.
Take your certified translation, original foreign license, and identification to an Alberta Registry Agent. They will assess your eligibility for a license exchange or require you to pass a written and road test. The translation must be recent – typically within the last five years – and match your current name and details.
